Bridge No. 206 Demolished Successfully
Over the night of the 27/28/02/2009, CDC demolished its 206th Bridge, since carrying out its first in 1983. This latest structure was a road over rail bridge, just north of Halesworth in Suffolk. The steel girder, brick jack arch bridge was heavily skewed across the railway and was the first operation to be carried out as part of the replacement of the total deck, during a 72 hour closure of the track.
CDC tendered for the works to Kier Rail as part of their Network Rail Framework Contract. The company submission, whilst not the cheapest, gave our client total comfort that we were able to carry out the works in the most safe manner and within the physical and time constraints imposed.
Although we were given control of the track later than anticipated, we were still able to complete our works well ahead of the original planned completion time. During the 15 hour two shift operation, we completed protected the tracks under the bridge, cleared over 800 tonnes of brick rubble and 120 tonnes of steel girders. Before lifting the track protection and handing back the site to our client.
